Out of the Silent Planet

We crawled so long on this one planet Earth;
we spun in perfect regularity
about the axis of our place of birth
with constant angular celerity.
Those eons in the cradle proved their worth
in hard-earned wisdom, knowledge, clarity--
but left us destitute of soul, a dearth
of--what? compassion? kindness? charity?
No, none of these; something akin to mirth,
till real joy became a rarity
and all we had remaining was a berth
aboard an ark toward singularity.
The hidden depths we leave posterity
want more than strength and wisdom to unearth.
